Students and activists protest before prosecution over alleged security assaults

Dozens of political activists and Ain Shams University students protested on Monday before the public prosecution, demanding an immediate investigation into alleged security assaults during a demonstration last week. The protesters carried placards and chanted slogans condemning campus security and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Hani Helal.

A number of students on Monday also filed an official complaint to the public prosecutor over the attacks. The petition–supported by a number of human rights organizations–demands the removal of the Interior Ministry affiliated campus guards and suggests their replacements answer directly to the university administration.

The students also denounced efforts to ban them from exams.

Meanwhile, Ain Shams President Maged al-Deeb refused to comment on the events, saying the university had already released a statement.

Abdel Galil Mostafa, of the 9 March Movement for the Independence of Universities, said the group would continue to bring awareness to students regarding the court order to remove state security from Egyptian universities.
