Syndicate condemns attack on prominent editor

The Journalists Syndicate condemned on Thursday an assault on Khaled Salah, the editor-in-chief of privately owned Youm7 newspaper and a presenter at CBC satellite channel.

Demonstrators in front of the Egyptian Media Production City assaulted Salah and damaged his car Wednesday evening as he entered the media free zone near 6th of October City.

Salah reported the attack to police and alleged that the Freedom and Justice Party was behind the incident.

The syndicate called for respect of freedom of opinion and expression and noted the openness of Youm7 to all viewpoints. It demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

A number of journalists and activists have expressed support for Salah in the wake of the attack and said they view it as a negative indicator for the future of media freedoms.

Novelist Alaa Al Aswany was quoted by state TV's website as saying that attacking someone over a difference of opinion is unacceptable, whatever the reasons.
