Top-ranking army officer assassinated outside his house

Anonymous gunmen killed a top-ranking army officer on Saturday morning outside his house in Obour City, northeast of Cairo, sources told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The sources said that perpetrators showered Brigadier-General Adel Raga’ai with bullets as he was leaving his house.

Raga'ai was commander of the 9th Armored Brigade and will be given a military funeral at Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi Mosque in the Fifth Settlement.

The 9th Armored Brigade is a vital part of the Egyptian Army's Central Command and has been deployed in Cairo in various critical circumstances.

One such deployment was during the January 25 revolution. Another one was in February 1986, when conscripts ran amok in the Haram area of Giza for two days, an event known as the “1986 Central Security riot". Soldiers from the brigade were brought in to end the disturbances.

The assassination comes days ahead of street protests planned for November 11, and weeks after President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced a plan to deploy the army within six hours only in case of any threat.
