Transport Minister: Railway Authority loses LE1.8 billion a year

Transport Minister Hani Dahi said on Tuesday that the Railway Authority loses LE1.8 billion every year.

“There are 65,000 workers in the railways,” he said. “We need to reach a breakeven point after paying for salaries and expenses.”

“We have wagons that are 55 years old,” he added. “We should put them in a museum.”

He said there are 1,332 official railway crossings and 4,500 illegal ones made by residents of different areas.

“We will close them down,” Dahi added.

Speaking at the Egypt Way of the Future Conference, the minister also said that Egypt needs LE2 billion to develop the road network, adding that human error constitutes 75 to 80 percent of road accidents.

He said the public sector will cooperate with the private sector in the transport of goods so as to link it with the national road network.
