Tunisian alleged rioters detained pending investigation

A Cairo prosecution department will keep eleven Tunisian fans detained for four days pending further investigation over charges of damaging public property and attacking civil servants during a soccer match last Sunday between Al-Ahly and Esperence Sportive de Tunis in the Africa champions league’s semifinal.

The injured officers will be checked by medical examiners in line with the prosecution’s demand.

The assaulted security agents said the fans beat them with fire extinguishers and ripped seats from the grandstand. The suspects denied the charges.

The prosecution listened to 28 witnesses who supported the officers’ accounts. Chief prosecutor Gamal Rahbany, ordered the formation of a panel of Cairo Stadium officials in order to assess the damages. Preliminary reports estimate the losses at LE150,000.

Esperance was beaten 2-1. Both teams will meet again in Tunisia on 17 October.
