UK Commons speaker, Egypt envoy discuss boosting parliamentary ties

CAIRO, Jan 9 (MENA) – Speaker of the British House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle met Egypt’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom Ashraf Sweilam to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and expanding parliamentary cooperation, according to a statement released by the foreign ministry on Friday.

The two sides reviewed the long-standing historical relations between Egypt and Britain and explored ways to enhance cooperation at various levels, with a focus on the role of parliamentary institutions in supporting bilateral relations.

Both officials expressed their commitment to boosting cooperation between the Egyptian and British parliaments through increased exchanges of visits and the sharing of legislative expertise.

The Commons speaker said he looked forward to visiting Egypt in the near future, praising the country’s cultural and historical significance. He also said he hoped to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, describing it as one of the world’s leading cultural projects.

Sweilam highlighted the deep-rooted historical bonds between Egypt and the UK, as well as the ongoing political and economic cooperation. He stressed Egypt’s interest in strengthening parliamentary dialogue and coordination to advance shared interests.

The meeting addressed future prospects for Egyptian-British relations, particularly ahead of preparations for an upcoming visit by the British prime minister to Cairo, during which the two countries are expected to announce the elevation of their relationship to a strategic partnership.
