The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) seeks to raise the quality of Egyptian essential oils through the “Upgrading the Medicinal and Aromatic value Chain – Access to Export Markets” (EMAP) project, according to a statement issued by EMAP on Wednesday.

The projet is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and is funded by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO)

According to EMAP statement, 14 small and medium essential oils producers in Upper Egypt were trained over one week as part of the project on raising the quality of their production to meet the needs of global market and thus increase Egypt's exports of essential oils.

"EMAP is working on the development of medicinal and aromatic plants sector in Egypt through an integrated approach which includes the establishment of a quality scheme consistent with global standards, raising the level of productivity of sector workers, and facilitating the access of products to the international market," said EMAP project manager Amr Abdin.

"The training which lasted for a week focused mainly on production, harvesting, post-harvest, quality, value addition and marketing of essential oils," Abdin added.

The EMAP statement mentioned that trainees have learned different means of cultivation and production, pest control, and analyzing the components of essential oils.

Trainees conducted field visits to medicinal farms and farms of essential oil plants and factories.

EMAP project was launched in November 2011 and is scheduled to continue until December 2015.
