Upper Egypt on high alert due to bad weather, 6 killed in Sohag

Six people have been killed in a car accident in Sohag due to bad weather conditions.

Local police filed a report saying the car was overturned on the eastern highway in an accident caused by poor visibility from a dust storm. The victims included four brothers.

Prosecution has been notified to conduct investigations.

In related news, a powerful dust storm broke early on Sunday in Aswan province, significantly reducing visibility.

Aswan governorate administration and traffic departments warned drivers against using highways and desert roads. All river traffic was stopped.

Civil protection troops, the ambulance department and electricity and maintenance teams were on high alert. The health department instructed medical staff to be on standby for emergencies.

Egypt has one of the world’s highest traffic accident mortality rates.

In December, the government’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said the number of car accidents during the first half of 2015 rose by 3.5 percent to a total of 6,916 accidents, compared with 6,685 accidents during the same period in 2014.The number of deaths, however, decreased by 2.7 percent, from 3,025 to 2,808 deaths in the first half of 2015.
