Wasat Party VP challenges FJP choice for People’s Assembly speaker

Essam Sultan, Wasat Party vice president, has announced his intention to run against Freedom and Justice Party candidate Saad al-Katatny for the position of People's Assembly speaker.

"I intend to break the Brotherhood’s political monopoly,” Sultan said, adding that he would work to bridges divides between the religious and secular movements and invite Katatny to a public debate.

“The speaker should be a young man who understands the demands of the youth,” 48-year-old Sultan said in a jab against Katatny, who is 60-years-old.

Leading Muslim Brotherhood figure Ahmed Abu Baraka said everybody has the right to run for this post.

“It is good to have competition,” he said.
