Yearly sun illumination of Ramses II face to be broadcast live internationally

Ambassador Nasser Hamdy, head of the Tourism Promotion Authority, said that the yearly event of the sun passing over the face of King Ramses II in the temple of Abu Simbel will be broadcast live on Tuesday for the first time internationally.

Hamdy also said the event will be posted on YouTube and on the website of the Tourism Ministry. “We want to show that tourist sites in Egypt are secure,” he said. “We also want to show the genius of the ancient Egyptians in astronomy.”

“Every year, the sun passes over the face of King Ramses II, once on his birthday and once on the day he died,” he explained.
