NASL calls for boycotting presidential elections

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy (NASL), which leads demonstrations calling for the return of ousted President Mohamed Morsy, urged its supporters to boycott the upcoming presidential elections that are slated for 26 and 27 May.

“The president’s post is not vacant because Morsy is still president,” the alliance said in a statement on Sunday. “We call on all Egyptians here and abroad to boycott the elections.”

The statement also said that Morsy, who spent only one year in power, came by the free will of the people and by fair constitutional procedures supervised and declared by the state's institutions.

“What happened was a coup whose perpetrators must be brought to trial in order to retain the will of the people and the democratic process,” the statement added. “Sisi is but another Mubarak and he and his accomplices will fall.”

Observers believe that former Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who ousted Morsy in July 2013, is likely to win the elections.
