A boat full of immigrants prepares to dock in the port of the Italian island of Lampedusa early, February 21, 2011. The past week has seen a sharp spike in migrants attempting to make it into the EU from Tunisia, with some 5,000 brought to Lampedusa after being intercepted by coastguards. The wave of immigration comes around a month after a revolution in Tunisia and another just over a week in Egypt that unseated their decades-old regimes, heightening social and economic tensions in the North African countries.

Border guards at the western military region arrested 11 people trying to enter Libya illegally through a desert crossing south of Salloum border exit.

Security patrol officers arrested the nine Sudanese nationals and two Egyptians who tried to cross the border.

The officers referred them to Salloum military prosecution for illegally crossing borders and presence in a military area where civilians are banned from being without permission.
