Alaa Abdel Fattah: Charges against me are illegal

Cairo Criminal Court allowed on Thursday activist Alaa Abdel Fattah, who is accused of breaking the protest law outside Shura Council, to leave the cage as per request by Lawyer Khaled Ali.

Abdel Fattah, who is an outstanding activist opposed to military leadership, said that the evidence is “illegal” adding that he was not threatened by the charges levelled against him.

“The evidence is illegal. No evidence against me could document such tweets through the computer. I am not a political activist. I am a graduate of Faculty of Computer and Information Science. I can confirm my testimonies in this regard are true,” he said.

Prosecution earlier accused Abdel Fattah, along with other 24 defendants involved in the lawsuit, of attacking policeman, stealing his walkie-talkie, staging protest without permission from the Interior Ministry outside the Shura Council, blocking roads and damaging public properties.

In 2014, Abdel Fattah and others were given a 15-year sentence in the case before a retrial took place.
