Ahmed Maher, founder of the April 6 Youth Movement and member of the Constituent Assembly, announced that he is joining some other members of the assembly and withdrawing his membership.

In a statement on Thursday, Maher said his decision to freeze his membership came late after considering all the proposals from civil forces, political parties and movements that were ignored by the assembly’s leading figures.

Maher said he would consider going back on his decision only if certain conditions were met. Demands from civil forces including disregarding sessions that took place this week must be met and the drafting committee broadened so that it represents more than one political trend. He added that the work of the assembly must also be extended by at least three months, open discussions over the articles held and a timeline set by which the assembly must finish its work.
