Crisis over killing of Mexican tourists in final phase: Egyptian ambassador

The Egyptian ambassador to Mexico, Yasser Shaaban, has said that the crisis between the two countries over the accidental killing of Mexican tourists last year is now in its final phase.

Egyptian security forces mistakenly killed 12 people and wounded 10 others in September when they attacked their convoy in the Western Desert. The tourist group was on a desert safari in an area where Egyptian security forces are hunting for Islamist insurgents.

Shaaban said that agreement on compensation is almost complete, while investigations by Egyptian authorities are nearing an end, and Mexico will be informed of the outcome soon.

He said the issue is being followed by lawyers for the victims' families, the Egyptian Travel Agents Association and the chamber for the Egyptian tourism industry.
