Hundreds mourners attended the funeral of Al-Husseini Abu Deif on Wednesday, a photojournalist with Al-Fajr newspaper who died in the hospital from a head injury he sustained while covering the clashes outside the presidential palace last week.

Abu Deif’s death brought the death toll to 10 from the fighting that broke out after supporters of President Mohamed Morsy attacked an opposition sit-in at the palace.

The funeral procession started from the Journalists Syndicate downtown to Omar Makram Mosque in Tahrir Square, as mourners shouted fir the fall of the government.

“The syndicate wanted the funeral to be held on Thursday but his family wanted to bury him quickly in his hometown in Sohag,” syndicate board member Abir Saady told the state-run MENA news service.

Former presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabahi and Abdel Hakim Abdel Nasser, son of the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser, were among the mourners.

Activists and politicians blamed Morsy’s regime for the death of Abu Deif and the nine others killed in the clashes.

The presidential office expressed its condolences in a statement on Wednesday.
