Five vehicles carrying 240,000 liters of diesel fuel arrived at Awja Port in northern Sinai on Sunday, ahead of a shipment to the fuel-starved Gaza Strip scheduled for the next day.

The shipment, which left from Zaytat Petroleum Port in Suez, is part of 12 million liters of diesel fuel Qatar is transiting through Egypt to Gaza as a gift to the Palestinian people.

Security patrols from the Suez police department accompanied the vehicles to ensure their security. The vehicles entered Sinai via ferries across Suez Canal.

The Gaza power crisis began when the supply of fuel smuggled in from Egypt began to fall. The situation improved in April after Hamas and the Palestinian Authority agreed to supply Gaza with fuel bought from Israel.
