Parliamentary speaker: Constitutional amendments in 2 months

The amendment of articles 76 and 77 will take no longer than two and a half months, People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour said.

In statements to Egyptian Television, Sorour said that at least two and a half months and should pass from the submission of a request for amendment before the changes can be put to a public referendum.

He added that the presidential election law should then be amended.

Sorour also said the People's Assembly law itself may be amended, as well as that of the Shura Council. These laws will be reviewed after the membership of the People's Assembly has been corrected, once parliamentary elections are re-conducted in certain constituencies.

Sorour said he expects the membership of the opposition to increase in the People's Assembly. He added that he had previously said he was not happy that the opposition was not properly represented in the People's Assembly.

According to Article 77 of the Egyptian Constitution, the President of the Republic may be re-elected for further successive terms, while Article 76 states conditions for candidates to run in presidential elections, and is widely criticized as heavily restricting presidential candidacy.
