Protesters close presidential palace gates with chains

Protesters have closed four gates of the Qubba presidential palace with chains and staged a sit-in in its gardens until President Mohamed Morsy stands down and early presidential elections are held.

The protesters held a banner reading: "The palace is closed by order of the revolutionaries until a new president comes."

Massive marches are scheduled to head to al-Waily, al-Zawya, Helmeyet al-Zatoun and the Ettihadiya presidential palace on Tuesday evening.

The Tamarod ("rebellion") movement has meanwhile announced it will hold its second official conference outside the main gate of the Qubba palace. The movement has reiterated its rejection of military rule.
