Fugitive policeman Mohamed Ibrahim Abdel Moneim, known as Mohamed al-Sunni, turned himself in on Sunday to be tried on charges of killing protesters in front of Zawya Hamra, sources from the Cairo Security Department said.

Major General Hassan Mourad said he was surprised that Sunni turned himself in and that procedures are underway to start a retrial.

Cairo Criminal Court has already handed Sunni several sentences in absentia for killing protesters during the 25 January revolution, including two death sentences.

The prosecution said investigators proved that he willfully killed 18 people by firing a hail of bullets to kill them and intimidate other protesters.

Sunni claims he is being used as a scapegoat by the police and the Interior Ministry. According to an interview with Al-Ahram newspaper in 2011, his lawyer claims that he was not issued with live bullets on the day and that the killing was mainly carried out by snipers on the roof of the police station.

Sources said he is being kept in a safe place, but declined to specify where.
