Scientific adviser: Gas reserves will run out by 2027

Maher Aziz, scientific adviser to the Environmental Affairs Apparatus, said Egyptian natural gas reserves will run out completely by 2027 if the energy consumption increase rate remains at 5.6 percent per year.

Speaking on Sunday to a conference on environmental concepts for industrial projects, Aziz said Egypt had 18.2 billion barrels of reserve oil in 2009 and 77 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, warning that this energy mix is unstable, especially that Egypt relies on 92 percent of it to generate electricity.

He said many countries, such as Germany, use clean coal technology for power stations, which he recommended for Egypt.
