Second building collapses in one week in Alexandria

At least five people were killed early Monday when a residential building collapsed in Montazah, Alexandria, in the second building collapse in the city this week, state-run MENA reported.

Khaled Ghoraba, Alexandria security chief, said five families were likely inside the 14-story building when it collapsed.

Another building collapsed on Saturday, killing the doorman and a child walking by at the time. Authorities had ordered the eviction and demolition of the 10-story building, which was empty at the time of the collapse.

In December 2010, a building that comprised a clothes factory collapsed killing 26 people and injuring 10 others.

Building collapses are a frequent problem in the coastal city, with several incidents occurring in recent years.

In 2007, a building collapsed in the Loran neighborhood, killing 36 and injuring three people. In 2008, a building collapsed in the Fleming neighborhood, killing 21 and injuring eight.
