Security source: North Sinai policeman killed after being hit by car

A policeman was killed on Saturday after unidentified assailants driving a car hit him near North Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid city, a security source said.

The source told Aswat Masriya that the policeman's body was found on the ring road leading to Al-Arish, North Sinai's capital and the Peninsula's largest city.

Eyewitnesses said the car hit the policeman after he left his house.

Egypt has been carrying out intensified efforts to fight militancy, which has surged since July 2013.

While the Sinai Peninsula is the part of the country most heavily affected by militancy, deadly attacks have taken place elsewhere across Egypt, including Cairo. The majority of attacks have targeted security personnel and facilities.

One week ago, Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and Defence Minister Sedki Sobhi inspected security forces in North Sinai.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi established a unified command to combat "terrorism" east of the Suez Canal last month, days after a series of attacks carried out on a single day left over 30 people in North Sinai dead.
