Tahrir Square partially reopened to traffic Tuesday

Calm prevailed Cairo’s Tahrir Square Tuesday morning after days of clashes between protesters and security forces since the commemoration of the second anniversary of the 2011 uprising last Friday.

Dozens of protesters and security personnel have been injured over the past two days in clashes near the Qasr al-Nil Bridge next to the square. The clashes extended to the Corniche and to the premises of hotels overlooking the Nile.

The square has been partially reopened to car traffic at Qasr al-Nil and Falaki streets, but remains closed at the entrances of Qasr al-Aini, Omar Makram, and the Egyptian Museum, state-run agency MENA reported.

Security forces apprehended 12 people who looted the lobby of the nearby Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel earlier Tuesday morning. Violent clashes also took place between protesters and security personnel in front of the Arab League's headquarters, and protesters hijacked two armored vehicles, setting one ablaze in Tahrir Square.
