Tourism minister stops Iranian flights to re-evaluate program

Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazou decided to stop incoming flights from Iran until the second half of June to reconsider a recent move to promote tourism between the two countries.

“We are re-evaluating our tourism programs with Iran,” Zaazou said Sunday.

Aswan International Airport had received the first charter flight from Iran on 30 March, carrying 45 Iranian tourists, for the first time in 33 years, in an implementation of a tourism convention recently signed between the two countries.

Previously icy relations between Egypt and Iran began to warm this year under President Mohamed Morsy’s leadership, with a visit from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Al-Azhar last month.

Egypt halted relations with Iran after the country’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.
