24th victim of H1N1 in Daqahliya

The Ministry of Health announced today the 24th death from the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, in Daqahliya.

The case was that of a pregnant woman, Samar al-Sherbini, 28, who had been admitted to hospital after her condition deteriorated, said Magdi al-Awadli, president of Mansoura International Hospital. Al-Sherbini's mother refused to allow her to enter the Intensive Care Unit allocated for H1N1 cases, he added.

A daily report released by the Health Ministry said five new H1N1 cases were reported in Daqahliya and another 26 suspected cases have been admitted to hospital.

In other news, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday the 40th avian flu death since the infection first appeared in Egypt in February 2006. The death was of a 40-year-old man from Daqahliya.

According to the World Health Organization, Egypt has a total of 119 bird flu cases, the third largest number of bird flu infections in the world.
