The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced a hotel employee and a female Brazilian guest to three years in prison with hard labor. The two were convicted of manufacturing a “cannabis-infused cake” and serving it to a Chinese tourist as a prank, Youm7 reported.
According to investigations and police reports, the bizarre incident unfolded when the Brazilian national suggested to the Egyptian employee that they prepare a well-known dish from her country, which she referred to as a “cannabis cake.” She then asked him to purchase a quantity of hashish (cannabis resin) to incorporate into the recipe.
The employee purchased the illicit substance, and the Brazilian woman prepared the cake inside the hotel kitchen, blending the hashish into the chocolate and cream ingredients. Once completed, she served the cake to her friend, a Chinese national who was also staying at the same hotel.
Medical emergency leads to arrests
The investigation revealed that shortly after consuming a portion of the cake, the Chinese tourist fell severely ill and experienced acute physical distress, requiring her immediate transfer to a local hospital, according to Youm7.
Subsequent medical examinations and toxicology reports confirmed the presence of cannabis in her system, prompting authorities to arrest both suspects.
Following a referral by the Public Prosecution, the Criminal Court reviewed witness testimonies alongside technical and medical reports, ultimately delivering a verdict of three years in prison with hard labor for both defendants.
