30% of Nile ferries do not abide by the law: report

Thirty percent of the Nile River's ferries and boats do not abide by safety standards or have licenses, according to a report by the River Transport Authority.
Around 600 boats have adjusted their legal status in the past two months, said the report.
Minister of Transport Saad al-Geyoushi said he is planning for new measures that would further control the river transport system, including the establishment of a body that would be responsible for public river transportation and the enforcement of safety regulations.
The minister will also put in place controls for the transfer of goods through the Nile, he added.
The River Transport Authority inspected safety standards of over 700 ferries in Cairo, Giza and the delta region in the past two months, said authority head Reda Ismail.
According to Ismail, 9,800 boats operate in Egypt's Nile.
