This day in history: Comedy icon Marie Monib dies

Deceased actress Mary Moneib was most famous for her role as a mother-in law in Egyptian cinema, with several movies named after these roles.

Moneib’s full name was Mary Selim Habib Nasrallah and known as Mary Moneib. She was born on 11 February 1905 in Damascus. She, along with her family, then moved to Egypt.
 
She started her career in theater with Fouad al-Gazayerly band, then joined several other bands, last of which was Naguib al-Rihany’s until he died in 1949. Her first cinema movie was made in 1934, while the last was in 1969, the year which marked her death on 21 January.
 
Although her diverse roles, the mother-in-law was the most popular as she used to be cruel yet funny.
 
Moneib had many successful movies like “Al-Azeema,” “Layla Bent al-Foqaraa,” “Le’bet al-Sett” and “Hamaty Malak.”
 
Moneib is the grandmother of the deceased singer Amer Moneib.
