Military lifts nationwide curfew for first time since January

The military on Wednesday lifted the nationwide curfew for the first time since 28 January.

Former President Hosni Mubarak had ordered the curfew after police withdrew from the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and Suez because of protests.

The curfew originally lasted from 3 pm to 8 am and was gradually shortened to 2 am to 5 am.

On 6 June, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces announced it would lift the curfew to encourage a return to normal life.

However, a poll conducted on the military council's Facebook page showed that a majority of participants wanted to postpone lifting the curfew until security is fully restored.
