Ancient tomb discovered in Alexandria

Mohsen Khalafallah of the Antiquities Ministry said a 2,300 year old tomb was discovered in the Qabari district west of Alexandria.
“It contains 34 square and gabled slots,” he said.

He also said that 127 pottery and glass artifacts were found, including a rare Hydra vase decorated with flowers for the ashes.

Mohamed Mostafa Abdel Meguid, former director of antiquities in Alexandria, said the tomb dates back to the Greco-Roman era, while the artifacts date back to the Ptolemaic era.

He explained that the tomb is part of the western necropolis of the ancient city of Alexandria where the Egyptians were buried, while the Greeks were buried in the eastern necropolis.

“Some artifacts bearing Christian drawings were also found, which indicates that the tomb was used in the Byzantine era as well,” he said.
