Antiquities Minister requests 30 June Axis Road change route to avoid archaeological site

Antiquities Minister Mamdouh al-Damaty has requested that Housing Minister Mostafa Madbouly change the route of the 30 June Axis Road that is being constructed parallel to the Suez Canal, as it would pass through the ancient city of Tanis.

In a memorandum he sent to Madbouly, Damaty said the road would divide the ancient city into an eastern part that includes the houses, the streets and the workshops and a western part that includes the port and the bulwark, adding that the road would also pass through the ancient cemetery.

He suggested the road be at least 500 meters away from the ancient city.

Preliminary work has already begun in the form of filling parts of Lake Manzala south of the city of Tanis.
