Arab League Cairo staff declares solidarity with Libyan protesters

Dozens of Arab League employees of different nationalities staged a vigil at the league’s headquarters in Cairo on Tuesday to express solidarity with demands by the Libyan people for political and economic change.

For the last three days, Libya has been racked by countrywide anti-government protests, which the Libyan authorities have met with increasing violence.

Arab League employees raised banners voicing their concern over news reports about mounting civilian casualties in Libya. They demanded that Libyan authorities refrain from using violence against protesters.

League Secretary-General Amr Moussa issued a statement on Tuesday expressing his "deep concern" over unfolding events in Libya and demanding a cessation of all acts of violence in the troubled North African nation.

Moussa also said that demands by the Arab peoples for reform, development and political change were "legitimate," going on to warn against attempts by some parties to "stir up sedition between sister states" at this "pivotal stage of Arab history."
