Arab League calls for military aid to Libya against ISIS

The Arab League called for an urgent Arab strategy to provide military assistance to Libya against ISIS, according to statements made during a meeting on Tuesday.

In closing remarks of an emergency meeting of permanent delegates, they pointed to the UN resolution 2214 that urges member states to help Libya establish security. The league also called on the international community not to limit the fight against terrorism to specific countries and organizations.

The members at the meeting stressed the importance of respecting the unity and sovereignty of Libya, committing to political dialogue to resolve the Libyan crisis and supporting the political efforts in the city of Skhirat under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General.

It also called on the sanctions committee of the Security Council to urgently respond to requests submitted to it by the Libyan, and on the Secretary General of the Arab League to follow-up this issue.

The Algerian delegation requested that military aid to Libya be within the political context desired by the international community for national dialogue and a national unity government that is qualified to fight terrorism with its army.

Jordan's representative, who is also the chairman of the meeting, said the Algerian request is not a reservation but rather an interpretation of the resolution that was passed unanimously.
