Cairo University investigates lost cancer patients’ records

Cairo University has said it will investigate the disappearance of cancer patients' records from its National Cancer Institute (NCI).

University chief Gaber Nassar told Al-Masry Al-Youm he had referred a complaint from NCI official Dr Ghada Sherif to the university’s legal department, in which she complained of the disappearance of records for more than 1,000 patients.

Sherif said she discovered the loss of the files a month ago and that the records contained the patients' medical history and personal information.

Sherif said she fears the files could be used by pharmaceutical companies to reach the patients and use them as guinea pigs in their research and experiments. This would be in violation of the NCI’s rules, which require prior permission before conducting experiments on patients.
