Cairo-Upper Egypt train traffic resumes following one-week halt

Train traffic between Cairo and Upper Egypt has resumed after being suspended for one week, Railways Authority chief Samir Nawwar told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Wednesday.

The authority announced last Wednesday the suspension of trips between Cairo and Upper Egypt starting last Thursday.

In a statement, the authority had said that it decided to stop trips from Minya and Assiut to Cairo in order to fix "some technical problems."

A source, however, said that security officials requested the halt after fears that pro-Brotherhood supporters may use the train system to transport large numbers of protesters to Cairo for the 25 January revolution anniversary.

Nawwar said that losses from the railway service halt stand at LE10 million. He added that 85 trips were canceled.
