The number of tourists increased in 2012 by 17.1 percent to 11.5 million visitors versus 9.8 million tourists in 2011, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.

Despite the increase, the figure has still not recovered to 2010 levels, when 14.7 million tourists visted the nation.

According to its 2012 tourism bulletin, CAPMAS said the highest numbers of tourists came from Western Europe, followed by Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

The total number of nights spent in Egypt by tourists in 2012 climbed 20.6 percent to 137.8 million, compared to 114.2 million in 2011.

Tourists from Arab countries also increased 26 percent to 2.3 million, up from 1.8 million in 2011.
