Court orders suspended detention of police officer, lawyer of ‘shoe’ incident

The Faraskour Misdemeanor Court ordered the suspended detention of police officer Ahmed Abdel Hadi and lawyer Emad Fahmy on Sunday. Fahmy had been beaten by Hadi with a shoe inside the Faraskour Police station.

Hadi was given a suspended sentence of three months in prison, a fine of LE3,000 and another LE5,000 as a preliminary compensation for violently assaulting the lawyer without legal justification, while Fahmy was given a suspended month in prison and a fine of LE1,000 for insulting a public official at his workplace.

The session was adjourned more than once when the defense teams engaged in verbal altercations.

Sameh Ashour, chairman of the Lawyers' Syndicate, attended the session that was held amid strict security measures. He had called for a general strike and asked President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to apologize for the incident.
