Death toll rises to 24 in Tuesday’s traffic accident

A car crash on Tuesday has claimed 24 lives after two of the injured died on Wednesday.

Thirteen people were injured and five severely wounded, when a sand-loaded truck hit five pickup trucks which were transferring people on the Anshas Road in Sharqiya Governorate.

The two people who died Wednesday succumbed to internal bleeding from brain and other injuries, according to general prosecutor’s report on the accident.

Security sources said the driver of the sand truck was arrested and referred to prosecution for questioning.

He was heading to Anshas when the truck collided with a red Chevrolet pickup that was trying to pass oncoming vehicles in the opposite lane.

The driver of the sand truck was charged with accidentally killing 24 people and injuring 13 as well as disobeying traffic instructions. However, the driver blamed the accident on the Chevrolet driver and the thick mist.

Investigators were having trouble recovering bodies as many were dismembered in the crash.
