Egypt committed to roadmap, Fahmy tells U.S., EU

Egypt has told the United States and the European Union that its government is committed to roadmap set by the army in the wake of President Mohamed Morsy's overthrow in early July.

A series of visits by international delegates has attempted to push through a resolution to Egypt's ongoing political crisis as thousands of supporters of the ousted leader continue sit-ins, protests and marches demanding his return to power.

Badr Abdel Atty, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said on Saturday that Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy had met with U.S. deputy Secretary of State William Burns and the EU’s envoy Bernardino Leon earlier to brief them on developments on the ground in Egypt.

Abdel Atty revealed that the minister stressed Egypt would push on with the roadmap, addng that national reconciliation would not exclude any political group – including the Muslim Brotherhood.

Fahmy, according to Abdel Atty, made it clear that although Egypt welcomes opinions from abroad, the final decision rests with the country's government.

It would make decisions based on the people's wil and the country's own interests, he added.

Abdel Atty claimed both U.S. and EU officials have emphaized that the future of Egypt should be decided by its own people, without foreign intervention.
