Egypt demands Israel stop violating Lebanon airspace

The Egyptian government demanded Sunday that Israel to stop its daily violation of Lebanon's airspace and respect the country's sovereignty.

In a press statement issued after a meeting with the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams, Egypt's Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr stressed the importance of efforts to preserve Lebanon's stability from potential negative impacts caused by regional unrest.

Amr's statements coincide with a growing diplomatic crisis between Egypt and Israel following the death of six Egyptian officers in an Israeli border raid in 18 August. Adding to the tensions, late last Friday angry Egyptian protesters stormed the Israeli Embassy in Cairo; later clashes with security forces left three protesters dead and hundreds injured.

On Saturday morning, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the attack on the embassy, which forced ambassador Yitzhak Levanon to leave the country earlier in the day.
