Egypt summons Qatari charge d’affaires in protest

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Badr Abdel Aaty has announced that the Qatari charge d’affaires to Egypt was summoned on Tuesday in order to deliver a letter of protest to his country.

The Qatari charge d’affaires was summoned as the Qatari ambassador is not in Egypt, Abdel Aaty added.

He also said that another letter was sent earlier to highlight necessity of achieving requests by Egypt, Arab and international police of extraditing the Egyptian fugitives and stopping violations against Egypt, referring to a statement given by Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi on Monday against Egypt.

Relations between Cairo and Doha deteriorated as the Gulf kingdom of Qatar condemned the removal of deposed President Mohamed Morsy, a major ally, last year.

Egypt closed Qatari channel Al Jazeera for what it sees as biased coverage of situation in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood and is trying 20 persons including some of its reporters for charges of defamatory reporting.
