Egyptian FM: Progress in indirect talks necessary

Making significant progress in indirect talks is a precondition for the launch of direct negotiations between the Palestinians and the Israelis, said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, as reported today by MENA.

Abul Gheit said this is the position of the Arab follow-up committee, which is due to convene on 29 July, and, as it is also the position adopted by the Palestinians, Egypt should insist on it.

Abul Gheit’s statements came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his meeting with President Hosni Mubarak slated for next Wednesday in Sharm el-Sheikh will focus on the means of launching direct negotiations between the two sides.
