Egyptian students protest Syrian bloodshed

Hundreds of students from Cairo and Al-Azhar universities protested Tuesday against the atrocities committed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime against the country's uprising.

Cairo University students raised Syrian flags and chanted slogans calling for the execution of Assad and support for the Syrian people.

Helwan and Al-Azhar university students joined them before they took the protest to the Foreign Ministry.

Al-Azhar University students also protested outside the embassies of Russia and China, two of Syria's remaining allies.

The students denounced both countries’ use of a veto to ban any resolution by the United Nations Security Council against the Syrian government, and raised photos of Assad and Russian leader Vladimir Putin covered in blood.

The protesters chanted slogans supporting the Syrian people and demanding the international community mount pressure on Assad to stop “the systematic war” and “massacres.”

Syrian forces have killed more than 7,500 civilians since the revolt against Assad began last March, a UN official said on Tuesday. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested the Syrian leader may be a war criminal.

“There are credible reports that the death toll now often exceeds 100 civilians a day, including many women and children,” Lynn Pascoe, the UN under-secretary general for political affairs, told the UN Security Council.
