Egypt’s first suspected case of black fungal infection announced in Menoufia

The governor of Menoufia Ibrahim Abu-Limon announced Friday that there was one suspected case of black fungus in the governorate’s hospitals, adding that they have been quarantined to conduct the necessary checks to determine if their case is a black fungal infection.

The black fungus disease affects some people who suffer chronic diseases, and those with weak immunity.

Director General of Mansoura University Hospitals Sharawy Kamal confirmed to Al-Masry Al-Youm on Friday that Mansoura University Hospitals have received four fungal infection cases, including black fungus.

He added the patients suffered from chronic illnesses. All were admitted into the ENT department and their condition is reportedly stable.

Two of the cases previously had coronavirus, one had a malignant breast tumor and was undergoing chemotherapy, and another had kidney failure.

All of these cases suffered from severe weakening of immunity which is the main reason for their infection, he said.
