Front row seats at Paris Fashion Week are hard to get – so you can imagine those who get them are the die hard fashion trend setters – those who stand at the brink of the season’s fashion ‘tipping point’. Whether buyers picking out the styles that will make or break their stores or celebrities thinking up their season wardrobes, a lot can be said for what this group is wearing – and saying.
It’s no wonder then that styles for fall and winter were apparent and noted in the audience at the shows – with the chill at the Paris 2010 Spring/Summer fashion week, only the models could get away with a summer look.
First of all – one would require a little background on the Fall 2009 show. The trends that stood out from the Fall 2009 shows included a lot of zippers and leather – cropped leather jackets and tough ankle boots. The dark look was taken a little further with boned tops (like corsets) and visible undergarments in lace and black – a trend that apparently will carry over through summer. The catwalks showed strong influences from the 40’s as well as the 80’s putting a strong emphasis on big shoulders and tapered legs with sequins and fur for a little panache. Tweeds, pinstripes and classic cuts were the signs of a worrisome financial situation where real investment lies in time-trusted value.
Needless to say, many of these trends were visible in the audiences at the Spring/Summer 2010 shows although the spirit of spring found its way into wardrobe choices across the board. What was most apparent was a strong contrast of girly and hard rock. Catwalk guests were spotted in short biker boots – both stuffed with skinny jeans or over ripped tights and matched with girly floral dresses. The Fall/Winter color apparent at the shows was teal… the blue-green shade appeared in scarves, on jewelry and in the little leather notebooks everyone chose to carry with them. While neons were visible on the catwalks last fall, the spring show audiences were not wearing much neon. All the same – there are some strong efforts to get neon into people’s wardrobes – perhaps in effort to cheer us all up a little.
Two reoccurring trends that we won’t be getting rid of any time soon – drape and the clutch – both appeared on catwalks and at the spring shows. The clutch is a little softer in fabric and studded to go with the hard rock effect. Pantsuits and silky shine are also here to stay but this winter, the look has grown up a bit – adding to a look of lavish luxury.
Cropped leather jackets were in abundance – it seems most fitting to match them with floral dresses for the contrast and with rocker t-shirts for a more consistent hard rock look. The embodiment of winter classics appeared in houndstooth and tweed while the Fashion Week party scene was dusted with sequins and shades of violet and moody blues.
