First incidence of violence reported in Daqahlia

In Daqahlia north of Cairo, clashes broke out between the two camps of voters during a referendum on constitutional amendments.

Eyewitnesses said one of the village chiefs in Belqas has been inciting voters to reject the amendments.

Supporters of a “no” vote attacked members from the Muslim Brotherhood, which has endorsed the amendments, injuring one. The army intervened and arrested two people.

There was high turnout at polling stations, which opened at 8AM.

In the areas of of Mansoura, Aga and Meet Ghamr in Daqahlia, there was unprecedented turnout for Copts. Church leaders said most Copts would reject the package of amendments.

In Manzala, also in Daqahlia, the National Democratic Party women’s quota candidate Wagiha al-Tabie, attacked the Brotherhood and accused the group of attempting to seize power.
