FJP to boycott presidential elections

The Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) has decided to boycott the upcoming presidential elections.

“This is our sole decision,” said Mohamed Toson of the party’s legal committee. “We don’t speak for the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy.”

“We are unable to meet because all our branches have been closed by the repressive authoritarian regime,” said Mohamed Ibrahim of the party’s supreme body. “Therefore, we have no choice but to boycott the elections.”

For his part, Magdi Qarqar of the National Alliance to Support Legitimacy said the member parties are inclined to boycott the elections as well.

“Elections in this stifled climate will not produce the democracy that
the 25 January revolution hoped for,” he said, calling on the regime to backtrack on the “coup” in order to restore stability in the country.
