The Supreme State Funds Prosecution approved a request submitted by former Information Minister Anas al-Fiqqi on Wednesday to pay back cash he received in the form of gifts from the Al-Akhbar Al-Youm Institution for Journalism.

Fiqqi testified that Al-Akhbar had given him LE100,000 worth of gifts over the period of three years. The investigation was conducted by Mohamed al-Naggar, the prosecution’s chief, and Hamed Rashed, the prosecution’s attorney general.

The former minister is among numerous officials and Hosni Mubarak cronies being forced to pay back millions of pounds after being gifted luxury items from state news organizations.

Fiqqi is currently serving a jail sentence in Tora prison in Maadi for corruption.
