GASC says wheat must be checked at source by Egypt

Egypt, the world's largest wheat importer, said on Thursday an Egyptian quarantine representative must travel to the wheat source to inspect cargoes before shipment for future tenders.

"This has now become an abiding condition..because it has proven successful in ensuring all wheat cargoes coming into Egypt are not detained and are fit for human consumption," said Nomani Nomani, vice chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC).

Until now, the condition has not been an obligation.

Quarantine officials in the most populous Arab country stepped up wheat inspections in June 2009, after a dispute erupted over the quality of two Russian wheat cargoes.
